With the recent release of the 9xxx series of cards, the folks at nVidia have been working hard on their upcoming architecture - codenamed D10U. With June 18th fast approaching, there are a few details about the upcoming card popping up around the place.
There has been some details published online regarding the new cards and what we can expect from them at a hardware level, and they look very nice on paper. The D10U will launch in two flavours - current codenames for the models are the GeForce GTX 280(D10U-30) and the GeForce GTX 260 (D10U-20).
Before focusing on the positives, I'd like to point out a potential downfall of the upcoming nVidia series. Unlike AMD/ATi's proposed Radeon 4000 series (also scheduled for a June release), the new nVidia cards do not (at this time) support DirectX extensions above 10.0. This will mean a lack of flexibility for developers, along with potential issues coming up in regards to newer rendering techniques. We will be seeing a full implementation and support of OpenGL 2.1 though, which is good news for potential use in Linux machines and those running OS X.
AMD/ATi will also be using GDDR5 on their upcoming series of cards, with nVidia sticking with GDDR3.
Onwards now - the raw numbers. The GeForce GTX 280, which will be the new flagship will sport a 512 bit memory bus. With support for 1GB of GDDR3, it's the card to run if you're planning on playing at high resolutions. It's sibling, the GeForce GTX 260, has a 448 bit memory bus, and has support for 896MB of memory. The GeForce GTX 260 will also have 48 stream processors disabled.
In addition, this will be the first series of nVidia cards which will incorporate PhysX hardware elements on the GPU, as opposed to CUDA implementation which is forthcoming for 8xxx series cards.
There should be more information on the new series of cards forthcoming in the next few days, so keep an eye out for more news.
